Amazon is the largest e-commerce site in the world and therefore, a good showcase for anyone who wants to make their products known and sell them.
In this context, the marketplace gives sellers the opportunity to fulfill orders themselves or let Amazon itself handle the fulfillment process.
In fact, Amazon sellers can use several fulfillment methods, including:
Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM) – also known as Merchant Fulfilled Network (MFN)
Amazon Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM) requires the seller to be responsible for the fulfillment process of the products purchased on the marketplace, and thus also for inventory storage, order fulfillment, returns, and customer service.
Alternatively, the online seller can partner with a third-party logistics service provider (3PL – i.e., Third-Party Logistics) in conjunction with FBM. The 3PL requires a vendor such as FBY to take care of the entire fulfillment process (picking, packing, warehousing, and shipping) on behalf of those selling items on Amazon.
Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA)
Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) is a way to sell on Amazon without taking care of the logistics aspects, such as shipping or returning goods. Product storage and customer support are handled directly by Amazon.
This is an advantageous fulfillment option, as products can be sold faster, but at the same time it involves expensive fees (sellers have to deal with not insignificant fees, such as those for long-term storage, warehousing, and fulfillment).
Although FBA is the most common method, in recent times many e-commerce brands have sought alternatives by choosing Amazon FBM.
Moreover, for many of these e-commerce companies, the combination of the FBM method and a fulfillment company (3PL) may be the optimal solution.
